JOB TITLE: Tech Lead - Java Engineer

SALARY: The salary banding for this role is £86,964 - £102,310

LOCATION: Edinburgh

HOURS: 35 hours, full time

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at one of our office sites.

About this opportunity

The Identity & Authentication Platform delivers capabilities to enable LBG business areas secure client and digital authentication and identity across all their digital channels. The Platform delivers core products including Identity & Authentication as a Service, giving end-to-end packaged services of several components for self-serve consumption.

As a Tech Lead, you’ll be responsible for leading a talented group of engineers, guiding them through the complexities of software engineering and overseeing the delivery of robust, scalable solutions. You’ll demonstrate your technical expertise to ensure that our products meet the highest standards of performance, reliability, and security while aligning with our strategic vision.

This role will give you the opportunity to work with modern tech stacks, microservices, and cloud-based architectures, while collaborating closely with multi-functional teams to drive continuous improvement and operational excellence.

What will I be doing?

  • Lead a team of engineers in developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining high-quality software applications and systems.

  • Establish and enforce standards, and methodologies for software engineering, ensuring alignment with business and customer needs.

  • Architect and design scalable, cloud-based solutions using microservices and APIs.

  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and partners to prioritize and deliver the software engineering roadmap.

  • Manage engineering team performance, offering guidance, coaching, and mentorship to team members.

  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation, staying updated on the latest tech trends and incorporating standard processes.

  •  Ensure quality is maintained across the engineering lifecycle, including continuous integration (CI), and continuous delivery (CD).

What you’ll need

  • Strong experience in software engineering, ideally with expertise in Java or similar languages.

  • A solid understanding of microservice architectures, API development, and cloud technologies (public and private cloud).

  • Practical experience in CI/CD pipelines and containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes).

  • Hands-on experience with performance engineering and cloud optimization techniques.

  • Familiarity with authentication and authorization protocols.

  • Knowledge of DevOps practices and tools (CI/CD pipelines, service mesh, orchestration).

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex technical issues into clear business solutions.
