As a directorate of the PRA, the Supervisory Risk Specialists (SRS) provides deep technical expertise and applies judgement in specific risk disciplines in order to identify, analyse and mitigate material risks to the safety and soundness of PRA regulated firms. SRS supports the wider Bank through providing risk specialist expertise to a range of functions.

SRS is split into four main divisions:

  • Credit, Risk Analytics, Capital and Liquidity (CRACL)
  • Operational Risk & Resilience (ORRD)
  • Model Development and Review
  • Investment Banking and Sector Risks

Department Overview

Within the Credit, Risk Analytics, Capital and Liquidity (CRACL) division of SRS, the Corporate and Financial Institutions (C&FI) team comprises a group of wholesale credit industry experts and practitioners, who are a center of expertise across the Bank of England and the PRA. The C&FI team focused on supporting the Bank's supervisory objectives. Key activities of the team include the following:

  • Firm reviews to assess and challenge credit risk management practices, including governance and control processes across the entire credit risk life cycle, assessing wholesale credit risk appetite and challenging market position and strategy.
  • Asset quality reviews, including examining underwriting standards across multiple wholesale asset classes (e.g. Corporates, Commercial Real Estate, SME, Financial Institutions and Sovereign exposures).
  • Horizon Scanning: Identify emerging and horizon risks pertaining to wholesale portfolios and assess potential impact on UK banks' portfolios. Ongoing monitoring of major UK banks' wholesale credit risks including assessing changes in reported asset quality and identifying areas of vulnerability.
  • Contribute towards wholesale credit risk judgements on the concurrent stress testing, review and challenge analysis undertaken of firms' stress loss projections for global wholesale portfolios.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the wider Bank of England to ensure that wholesale credit risks are widely understood throughout the organisation and contribute to a joined up and holistic regulatory framework.

Job Description

This is a leadership and people management role within the C&FI team. Your responsibilities include day-to-day management of a team of approximately ten wholesale credit risk specialists and defining roles and responsibilities. You will develop your team through sharing information effectively, mentoring and communicating a clear vision to ensure that your staff are productive, engaged and motivated to deliver the team's aims. This will include setting clear goals and smart stretching objectives that align to those of the team, division and directorate. You will also be responsible for managing all staff-related matters that may arise including performance, absence and sickness.

As Senior Manager of the C&FI team your duties include:

  • Providing strong management and leadership to a team of risk specialists. You will set out the strategy and plan the team's work, taking a risk-prioritised approach, to assess firms' wholesale credit risk management capabilities.
  • Leading the process by which the team undertakes Asset Quality Reviews which generally involves assessing a firm's governance, strategy, risk appetite, portfolio quality, underwriting standards, credit risk control framework and impairment / provisioning practices.
  • Overseeing cross-firm / market reviews to assess firms' comparative portfolio performance and risk concentrations.
  • Leading on horizon scanning for emerging risks in wholesale portfolios and ongoing monitoring of asset quality changes at major UK banks.
  • Contributing towards concurrent stress testing related work. This is primarily to review and challenge projected losses for wholesale portfolios, such as Commercial Real Estate, Large & Mid-Corporate, SME, Sovereign and FI exposures.
  • Ensuring the team's output is of high quality and meets the needs of its stakeholders. This includes reviewing papers, applying appropriate quality assurance to the analysis and providing steer to the staff on how to tailor their output to most effectively meet the PRA's objectives.
  • Providing leadership for each individual's career development within the team.
  • Being a member of the CRACL and SRS senior management team; acting as a trusted advisor to supervisors and contributing critical judgements to committees. In particular, as the C&FI Team Senior Manager, you should be a role model for collaborative working.

Minimum Criteria

  • Previous experience in people management and leading a team of credit risk specialists.
  • Excellent knowledge and substantial experience and understanding of Credit Risks arising from one or more Wholesale Lending businesses (Credit portfolios), industrial sectors, products, collateral, governance and policies, together with related risk analytics.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills: the ability to present complex issues clearly.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead across a range of projects simultaneously, including setting objectives, monitoring progress against plan, and keeping stakeholders informed.
  • Impressive personal impact, influencing and inter-personal skills and demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate complex technical concepts to both senior technical and non-technical audiences, both verbally and in writing.
  • A demonstrated ability to work across boundaries effectively and engage collaboratively with staff at all levels.

Desirable Criteria

  • Proven credit risk experience gained in relevant roles
  • A good understanding of the end-to-end wholesale credit risk process
  • Good knowledge of IFRS 9
  • Knowledge of stress testing of wholesale portfolios.
  • Awareness of financial reporting and regulatory treatment of wholesale portfolios.

Salary and Benefits Information

We encourage flexible working, part time working and job share arrangements. Part time salary and benefits will be on a pro-rated basis as appropriate.

This role offers a salary of £108,800-£122,400. In addition, we also offer a comprehensive benefits package as detailed below:

  • Currently a non-contributory, career average pension giving you a guaranteed retirement benefit of 1/80th of your annual salary for every year worked. There is the option to increase your pension (to 1/65th) or decrease (to 1/105th) in exchange for salary through our flexible benefits programme each year. The Bank has the discretion to vary standard accrual rates and dial up and dial down rates at any time and to withdraw dial up and dial down options at any time.
