The Payments Directorate sits at the heart of the UK's financial system, playing a critical role in delivering the Bank's mission. We design and operate the Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) service and CHAPS, the UK's high-value payment system. RTGS ultimately lies at the heart of every electronic payment in the UK and settles over £800 billion on an average working day.

The directorate leads on policy and innovation for our Payments services and helps shape the broader payments landscape, both domestically and internationally. Drawing on our expertise in innovation and delivery, we are now embarking on a programme to enhance the new RTGS 2 platform, enabling the UK financial sector to innovate while ensuring safe and efficient settlement in central bank money.

Job description


An opportunity has arisen to provide dedicated PA support to 3 senior managers and monitoring the PA support mailbox used by other senior managers within the Payments Operations and Payments Delivery division. This position would suit a PA who is looking to broaden their skill base and exposure to external contacts in a busy area. The jobholder will need to be well organised, a good communicator, comfortable liaising at all levels, work flexibly and able to work effectively within the team.

Responsibilities include:

Provide full PA support to 3 senior managers, ad hoc admin support to their teams and monitoring the PA support mailbox

Provide diary management support, arrange meetings appropriately to effectively maximise use of time, resolve clashes and use own judgement as to which meetings take priority

Arrange meetings with internal/external contacts including regular bilateral and team meetings

Plan and co-ordinate domestic/foreign travel and process expenses

Cover Head of Payment Delivery Division PA role on a regular basis


The job holder will also be an active and collaborative member of the Payments PA Support Team. The unit is self-covering so the jobholder will be required to help cover absences including the Head of Division (HoD) PAs.

Essential Criteria

Excellent PA/Secretarial skills with a sound knowledge of all Microsoft Office programmes and Technology platforms, in particular Outlook, Word, MS Teams and OneNote

Strong organisational, prioritisation and time management skills

Ability to communicate with people at all levels, whether internal or external

Maintain and manage confidential data in a professional and secure manner

Ability to multi-task and work to tight deadlines under pressure, with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy at all times

Strong team player who is flexible, adaptable and has an ability to work effectively within a team including covering other secretarial roles on the directorate.

Ability to self-motivate and proactively undertake tasks using own initiative, to make decisions and willing to cover other PA roles during absences.

Salary and Benefits Information
We encourage flexible working, part time working and job share arrangements. Part time salary and benefits will be on a pro-rated basis as appropriate.

Salary is circa £24,500 - £26,280. In addition, we also offer a comprehensive benefits package as detailed below:
  • Currently a non-contributory, career average pension giving you a guaranteed retirement benefit of 1/80th of your annual salary for every year worked. There is the option to increase your pension (to 1/65th) or decrease (to 1/105th) in exchange for salary through our flexible benefits programme each year. The Bank has the discretion to vary standard accrual rates and dial up and dial down rates at any time and to withdraw dial up and dial down options at any time.
  • A discretionary performance award based on a current award pool.
  • An 8% benefits allowance with the option to take as salary or purchase a wide range of flexible benefits.
  • 26 days' annual leave with option to buy up to 12 additional days through flexible benefits.
