People are living longer and we’re excited by the opportunities this brings to help people live their best lives. We’re here for everyone who wants to make the most of their time on the planet and leave it a little better than they found it – however grand or humble their ambitions.
We help people live their best lives. We help them with the big stuff, for the moments that matter: Pensions, Savings, Investments. At Aegon, we strive in creating a diverse organisation that plays a meaningful role in driving greater equity, inclusion and belonging.
We’re looking for a Legal Counsel to join our team – a great opportunity for someone looking to build on their experience and develop their legal career within a collaborative, in‑house environment.
In this role, you’ll support the business by providing clear, practical legal advice across areas including disputes, complaints, regulation and pensions. You’ll work closely with colleagues across the business, helping them manage risk, resolve issues and make well‑informed decisions.
Key Responsibilities include:
Providing straightforward legal advice on disputes and complaints, helping colleagues understand risks and next steps
Supporting the resolution of issues before they escalate to Court, the Ombudsman or the Pensions Regulator
Assisting with cases that progress externally, working with senior team members to manage risk and outcomes
Interpreting regulatory guidance (including from the Pensions Regulator) and helping the business apply it in practice
Supporting the instruction and management of external legal advisers where needed
Representing the business in meetings with external bodies such as the Ombudsman or regulators, with support from the wider team
We’d love to hear from you if you have:
Qualified solicitor or barrister (Scotland and/or England)
Experience in dispute resolution, litigation or complaints handling (ideally within financial services or pensions, but not essential)
A good understanding of contract law and the regulatory environment
Some experience or exposure to working with regulators such as the Pensions Regulator
Strong written skills, with the ability to draft clear and accurate legal documents
Confidence communicating with a range of stakeholders, with a practical and approachable style
Good judgement and a willingness to learn, with the ability to break down complex issues into clear advice
What’s in it for you?
We’re serious about your future and our enhanced pension scheme is now in place. We ask you to contribute 3% of your salary to your pension and we’ll put in 9%. If you decide to contribute more, we’ll match it up to a combined total of 20% of your salary (that’s 7% from you and 13% from us).
A discretionary bonus, depending on personal and company performance
36 days leave per year (including bank holidays, pro-rated for part-time)
We also offer private medical cover, life assurance, critical illness cover, enhanced parental leave and a variety of lifestyle benefits to help our employees live their best lives, including retail discount vouchers, cycle2work scheme, subsidised restaurant and online GP appointments. If you're motivated by complex challenges, confident advising at senior levels, and eager to shape how we navigate disputes, regulation and litigation, we’d love to hear from you.
