About this opportunity
This is a senior engineering and delivery leadership role focused on the Unisys mainframe environments supporting some of Lloyds Banking Group’s most important banking services.
You’ll join the Enterprise Lab within Core Infrastructure, reporting to the Engineering Lead. You’ll lead the engineering teams responsible for building, running, protecting and modernising our Unisys infrastructure.
These are mission-critical environments that process high-value customer transactions and must operate securely, reliably and resiliently within a highly regulated organisation. The role therefore requires more than general infrastructure leadership. We’re looking for someone who understands the distinctive operational, engineering and lifecycle challenges associated with mainframe platforms and the specialist teams that support them.
We're looking for someone to lead, inspire and develop a team of infrastructure engineers. You'll drive a strategic effort to improve the agility, pace of operations and cost, of our Lab for LBG. The services you'll help lead, develop, and operate are at the core of our infrastructure and require high quality while moving fast to keep up with our customers' needs. This is an exciting time to join the team!
What you’ll be doing
Lead, inspire and develop multidisciplinary engineering teams responsible for Lloyds Banking Group’s mainframe infrastructure and associated runtime services.
Own the technical integrity, availability, resilience, recoverability and security of the Unisys platforms within your scope.
Maintain effective oversight of production service performance, operational risks, vulnerabilities, capacity, software currency, hardware lifecycle and technical debt.
Lead complex infrastructure change, including hardware refreshes, software upgrades, resilience improvements, security remediation, service transitions and platform decommissioning.
Ensure changes are appropriately designed, tested, risk-assessed and governed, with robust implementation, recovery and stakeholder-communication plans.
Act as a senior escalation point during major incidents, bringing together engineering teams, application owners, service management, suppliers and senior stakeholders to restore service and address root causes.
Strengthen incident, problem and change-management practices, ensuring that learning is converted into preventative action, improved automation, stronger controls and more resilient services.
Work closely with Unisys and other strategic technology suppliers, providing effective oversight of service performance, technical support, commercial commitments, risks and improvement plans.
Drive automation and operational simplification across platform engineering activity.
Build sustainable engineering capability through coaching, mentoring, succession planning, knowledge capture and structured development pathways for engineers.
Why join us?
We’re transforming at pace. Investing billions in our people, data and tech to change the way we meet the needs of our 28 million customers. We’re growing, and we’d love you to be part of the journey.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for an experienced engineering or technology leader with a solid understanding of mainframe environments and the operational disciplines required to run business-critical services.
You’ll bring experience in the following areas:
Leading infrastructure, platform or service-delivery teams responsible for mainframe environments.
Developing specialist engineering teams, addressing key-person dependencies and creating credible succession and skills-transition plans.
Leading major incident recovery, root-cause investigation, problem management and preventative improvement activity.
Operating mission-critical, high-availability platforms within financial services or another highly regulated industry.
Ownership of platform strategy, lifecycle management and technical roadmaps
Managing technology suppliers, support partners, service levels, escalations and commercial commitments.
Any experience of these would be particularly valuable
Unisys ClearPath environments.
Hardware refreshes, operating-system upgrades, platform migrations or data-centre change.
Disaster recovery, cyber recovery, resilience testing and recovery assurance for critical mainframe services.
Core banking, mortgages, payments or other high-volume transactional services.
Automation, monitoring and observability within enterprise mainframe environments.

Returner opportunities
Returning to work after time away can be challenging. That’s why we offer Returner opportunities that are designed to assist people returning to work after a career break of 18 months or more and our roles are permanent from the day one. Whether you’ve been away from work due to parenthood, illness, or even travel, we’re looking forward to hearing from you as we continue to grow!
What can you expect?
Coming back into the world of work after a career break can be really daunting – and we therefore know how important flexibility is. We’re very aware that ‘normal’ office hours aren’t always doable, so will happily have the discussion about different working patterns with you.
These roles have been created with your career break in mind, making sure we are there to support you in your transition back to work. You will be brought in on a permanent contract and given meaningful work from day one. Plus, you’ll be paired with a buddy or mentor from your team to help guide you along the way. You’ll also benefit from being part of the wider Returners Community and have the chance to create a personal development plan that works for you.
Who are we looking for?
While banking or professional services experience is desirable, especially for some roles, we care more about the transferable skills you can bring to our business.
Testimonials
I had a good network of colleagues already working for Lloyds Banking Group, who were all very passionate about their roles - so it felt the right choice for me and gave me the courage to apply for a Business Analyst role through the Returners. It was a seamless recruitment experience and I was offered a role in the work I wanted to do.
Olufunke Oladinni, Business Analyst
I love being a Project Manager, and I can’t recommend the Lloyds Banking Group Returners enough. It’ll springboard your career, giving you the best opportunity to relaunch yourself and maximise your full potential.
