Treasury and FP&A Technology is seeking a highly accomplished and experienced Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Loan Portfolio Mitigation Application (IRIS). The successful candidate will lead a team of software developers, overseeing the design, development, and implementation of sophisticated credit risk hedge decision systems. This leadership role requires a deep understanding of financial markets, quantitative methodologies, robust software engineering principles, and proven management capabilities to drive strategic initiatives in trading, risk management, and hedging.
This is a senior technology leadership role that demands deep technical mastery, sharp business acumen, and a proven track record of architecting and delivering complex, enterprise-grade solutions at scale. The ideal candidate is a practitioner-leader who does not just direct from the sidelines, but actively engages in technical design, architectural decision-making, and hands-on development. You will serve as the definitive technology authority for IRIS, owning end-to-end solutioning from requirements through to production, while simultaneously driving multiple high-performing Agile Scrum teams with pace and precision.
A strong grounding in financial engineering is essential — the IRIS platform is, at its core, a sophisticated financial engineering system, encompassing Credit Default Swap (CDS), Collateralized Loan Obligation (CLO), and balance sheet hedging strategies. The successful candidate will be expected to engage fluently with quantitative finance concepts, understand the mathematical and regulatory underpinnings of loan portfolio mitigation, and translate complex financial models into robust, scalable technology solutions. Your ability to communicate with clarity across both technical and non-technical audiences will be as critical as your engineering depth.
Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management: Lead, mentor, and manage a team of software developers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Strategic Oversight: Define and drive the technical strategy and roadmap for software development, aligning with business objectives and market developments. Exercise strategic influence over delivery execution, resource allocation, and budget planning while ensuring predictable outcomes.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate extensively with senior traders, risk managers, product managers, and other quantitative analytics teams to understand complex business requirements and deliver innovative solutions.
Governance and Control: Work in close partnership with control functions such as Legal, Compliance, Market and Credit Risk, Audit, Finance to ensure appropriate governance and control infrastructure.
Software Engineering Excellence: Ensure the adoption of best practices in software engineering, including robust architecture, efficient coding standards, and scalable system design. Drive engineering excellence by setting expectations around clean code practices, testing strategies, design principles, and system resiliency. Champion the responsible adoption of Copilot, Devin, and other AI assisted development tools to enhance developer efficiency and experience.
System Integration & Performance: Direct the integration of quantitative libraries and models into critical front-office trading and risk management systems, ensuring high performance, reliability, and scalability.
Research & Innovation: Drive research into new quantitative techniques, market trends, regulatory changes, and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in software engineering, ensuring the team remains at the forefront of quantitative finance.
Influence and negotiate with senior leaders across functions, as well as communicate with external parties as necessary.
Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.
Recommended Qualifications:
Progressive experience in quantitative development or quantitative analysis within a financial institution, with a significant portion in leadership or management capacity. Strong focus on rates and credit products is essential.
Strong expertise in providing technical solutions and architectures for complex business problems, identifying the benefits and risks of the solutions, and providing customer-centric design recommendations. 5+ years of experience in senior leadership roles.
Deep, hands-on expertise in Java and the Spring Boot framework.
Expert-level proficiency in Python.
Strong understanding of RESTful API design, microservices architecture, distributed systems, and service decomposition patterns.
Strong proficiency in SQL and relational database design, with hands-on experience in Microsoft SQL Server or equivalent enterprise RDBMS.
Familiarity with financial data modelling concepts — particularly loan portfolios, balance sheet structures, credit default swaps (CDS), and regulatory reporting schemas.
Proficiency with Lightspeed pipeline frameworks or equivalent Kubernetes-native CI/CD tooling. Exposure to Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, either on premises or public clouds (e.g. Jenkins)
Strong working knowledge of OpenShift (or Kubernetes) for container orchestration, pod management, build configuration, and on-premises deployment patterns.
Experience managing Git-based SCM at an enterprise scale, including branching strategies, code review governance, and repository management.
Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop high-performing engineering teams. Experience in project management, resource allocation, and strategic planning.
Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and frameworks (e.g., Scrum, SAFe) and working in Agile teams.
Proficiency with Jira for backlog management, sprint planning, and delivery tracking at scale.
Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex financial challenges into robust quantitative and technical solutions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of articulating complex technical and quantitative concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior management.
Education:
Bachelors/Masters in a quantitative field such as Financial Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or equivalent.
Professional Certifications (AI, OpenShift, Agile, Architecture) – Advantageous.
Deep understanding of fixed income markets, interest rate derivatives (swaps, bonds, and loans), and interest rate curves. Extensive knowledge of credit products including Collateralized Loan Obligations (CLOs), Credit Default Swaps (CDS) and credit risk modelling (e.g., default probability and recovery rates).
Strong foundation in numerical methods and statistical analysis.
